The Basics
The San Francisco men's cross country team heads to the Sacramento State Inter-Regional Jamboree for a first look at the NCAA West Region course at Haggin Oaks GC. The competition from throughout the region includes five teams in the regional rankings, headlined by No. 12 in the nation and third in the region, UCLA.

Other top teams participating in the preview meet include regionally ranked Cal Poly (8th), California (12th), UC Santa Barbara (14th) and UC Davis (15th). Adam Smith will be hitting the course for the first time this season, as will Charlie Johansen and Jimmy McManus. The Dons are opting to sit out sophomore Eric Causey. The sophomore has started the 2013 campaign on a tear, earning first at the USF Invitational to open the year and following that up with a fourth-place finish at Stanford last weekend.

"The way the schedule falls this year it's a little problematic because of the rhythm of our racing," head coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "Normally, the men's side we wouldn't race back-to-back but we had to do it at some point.

"It will give our men's team an opportunity for somebody else to step up and lead the team and see what that dynamic brings for the rest of the group. We just want to take this weekend as an opportunity to get a little bit better at race execution and get a preview of the NCAA West Region course. "

Last Time Out
The men were powered by a fourth-place individual performance by Eric Causey at the Stanford Invitational in the season's second meet. Jarrett Moore finished 13th overall as the Dons took fourth in the team standings.

Dons in the Rankings
The men, who cracked the regional rankings in 15th in the preseason polls, find themselves looking to return to the list after slipping out of the Top 15. West Coast Conference competitor Portland holds the No. 2 spot in the region, with Loyola Marymount in 120th and Gonzaga standing in13th. BYU (5th) and Portland (8th) both rate high in the national coaches' poll, as the only two WCC schools receiving votes.

The next USTFCCCA national poll will be released on Oct. 8, with the regional rankings scheduled for release one day prior.
