The Basics
The Dons hope to capitalize on youth and energy as the contingent of seven, which includes four underclassmen, run the fast course at Alumni Park in Malibu, Calif.
Head coach Helen Lehman-Winters says the Dons are brimming with potential, and have the opportunity to see both team and individual success in the 2013 West Coast Conference Championships.
"Our men's team is relatively young and developing – it's a new squad from what we've had the past couple years and they're still learning to master the 8,000 meter distance," she explained. "We're excited about the guys that are going and we have a lot of ability in that squad, we just haven't put it all together on the same day, so we're looking forward to the opportunity to go head-to-head with some teams in the conference and rise up and battle. The conference championships bring a different dynamic to racing – a smaller venue, it's head-to-head and you can identify where your race is pretty easily because the field is not large."
Individually, Eric Causey, two-time individual champion in 2013, is expected to set the pace.
"Eric is on a roll, has great momentum, is a gamer and I'm really excited to see how he matches up against the top kids in the conference. We fully expect Eric to be right in the mix of it," Lehman-Winters said. "Obviously, I'm sure he's excited to run against the best guys from nationally-ranked Portland and BYU, but he's just going to go out and race and get the most out of himself. He's capable of running with whoever is going to run at the front of that field. One thing that Eric has proved this season is he can find that finish line."
Remix: Bronco Invitational
At Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational, sophomore Eric Causey raced to his second individual title and a course record at Baylands Park. After winning the USF Invitational to start the season, the Encinitas, Calif., native, has continued to dominate as the season progresses. He beat his closest competitor at the meet, WCC foe Rajpaul Pannu of Saint Mary's, by nearly 12 seconds. Junior Jarrett Moore crossed the line in 36th place, as the second USF runner to cross the line. The Dons took seventh in the team standings.
Last Time at the WCC Championships
Paced by all-conference honorable mention runner, Jose Madera, the Dons took fourth in the team standings, falling two points shy of third-place Gonzaga.
Sound Bites
We're always excited to travel to a new venue for the conference championships. Last year, we the opportunity to travel to the Pacific Northwest and get to experience typical rainy Pacific Northwest weather so we're looking forward to going to Southern California and experiencing the opposite. - Helen Lehman-Winters on the SoCal course
