STANFORD, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women found success both on the track and in the field at the Stanford Opener Saturday.
Hillary Harris set a new personal best en route to the school record in the 400 meters. The sophomore from Hillsboro, Ore., shaved more than a second off the previous best time of 58.76, set by Aly Drake March 6, 2010. Harris rounded the track in 57.30 s to finish third. Harris is utilizing this experience in the 400 meters to prepare for her primary event, the 800, as the season progresses.
Another school record was broken at Cobb Track and Angell Field Saturday, in the discus.
Laticia Lonon's throw of 40.0 m improved upon the school record she already owned. Lonon, a sophomore from Santee, Calif., finished the competition in fourth, and bested her previous mark of 39.91 m set April 27, 2012.
Kate Jamboretz paced the Dons in the 1500 meters, turning in a time of 4:33.86 which was good for fifth in the race. Head coach
Helen Lehman-Winters is confident that Jamboretz' early showing in the 1500 meters has demonstrated that she will be very effective in this event for USF.
Capping off the meet, the USF 4x400 meter relay team recorded win against teams from Stanford and California, finishing more than a second ahead of its closest competition.
Laura Huarte, Dons assistant coach said, “I am extremely pleased about how many personal bests we had in the field today. This is an exciting and encouraging start to our season.”
“We had some really solid early season marks today,” added Lehman-Winters. “It was great to see field athletes open up with some competitive marks, and we had some gutsy performances on the track.”
USF will continue its outdoor season Saturday at the Aggie Open in Davis, Calif.
