SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's track and field team continues to make its mark on the 2013 track season, and Saturday at the Johnny Mathis Invitational was just the latest successful showing for the 63rd-best team in the country.
A USF highlight at Cox Stadium came at the 800 meter distance as
Kate Jamboretz earned the victory. Her time of 2:13.36 narrowly edged her closest competitor, Laura O'Neill of Cal, by one one-hundredth of a second to top the field. This marks a new collegiate best for the freshman from Boise, Idaho, as well as the top USF performance of the season.
“Kate ran an excellent race today,” coach
Helen Lehman-Winters said. “She was patient and executed well finishing strong for the win. She looks great and is ready to roll over the next couple months.”
She now has turned in team-best times in both the 800 and 1,500 meters.
Lea Lundblad's 2:18.36 was good for the top time in her heat and fourth overall in the 800 meters.
Two more school records fell at the Johnny Mathis Invitational, with
Eleni Fkiaras besting her mark in the 400 meter hurdles while winning her heat in 1:07.16. Teammate
Cameron Grant was close behind, finishing in 1:08.34 to take second in the heat. Overall, the pair came in seventh and eighth, respectively.
After setting a school record in the 200 meter dash at the Aggie Open on March 9,
Kamilah Davis added her name to the USF record books in the 100 meter dash. Her time of 12.49 improved upon a nearly five-year old mark set by Gabriel Harrington May 3, 2008.
The Dons got two Top 10s in the 1,500 meters, with
Elena Burkard's 4:31.59 leading the way and giving her a third place finish
Maor Tiyouri came in sixth with a 4:34.13 in the field of 62 competitors.
“We had multiple personal and seasonal bests today on a beautiful day at the track,” Lehman-Winters said. “I am pleased with how competitive our athletes were and we made some real progress with race execution.”
Up next, USF will enjoy another weekend close to home as the team splits up to compete in the SF State Distance Carnival Friday at Cox Stadium, and the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field Friday and Saturday in Stanford, Calif.
