SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco men's track and field took to the track at the Johnny Mathis Invitational hosted by San Francisco State at Cox Stadium Saturday.
The Dons posted a winning performance in the 800 meters, with
Steven Garboden's time of 1:53.96 pacing the field. Garboden, who ran his first collegiate 800 meter race on March 9 at the Aggie Open, can now boast the top two team performances in this distance.
“Steven continues to be very competitive whenever he steps on the track,” coach
Helen Lehman-Winters said. “He is an entirely different place than he was last year, and I look forward to what he is capable of doing as the season unfolds.”
Sean Gomes, sophomore from Modesto, Calif., came in third to give USF two medalists in the 800.
Robert Parker continued to impress in the javelin, as the sophomore from San Clemente, Calif., came in with a 58.81 meter hurl to take second.
Cameron Farrell, who competed in three events on Saturday, capped his full day of competition with a personal best throw of 44.11 meters to earn a third-place finish.
Three men finished in the Top 10 at the 1,500 meter distance with
Jose Madera's 3:53.00 leading the USF charge as he finished sixth.
Eric Causey and
Ganbileg Bor earned a 1-2 finish in their heat and came in seventh and 10th overall.
Adam Smith ran a 3:59.36 to take 13th with
Gustavo Mena right behind at 3:59:76 for 14th in the field of 61 competitors.
“We had multiple personal and seasonal bests today on a beautiful day at the track,” Lehman-Winters remarked. “I am pleased with how competitive our athletes were, and we made some real progress with race execution.”
Up next, USF will enjoy another weekend close to home as the team splits up to compete in the SF State Distance Carnival Friday at Cox Stadium, and the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field Friday and Saturday in Stanford, Calif.
