SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's tennis team came up just short of advancing to the semifinals Thursday morning, falling to the San Diego Toreros by a score of 4-3 to end USF's season.
The contest was a rematch of the April 5 match that USF led 3-1 before a San Diego rally stunned the Dons, 4-3, on Senior Day at Golden Gate Park.
Thursday, the Dons fell behind 3-0 before
Andrea Ka,
Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and
Sofia Holmberg notched consecutive victories to even the match at 3-3.
Much like the April 5 match, the deciding point came down to
Marina Nikolic at No. 4 singles. Nikolic took the first set, 6-4, but San Diego's Marta Stojanovic countered with 7-5, 6-2 victories to eliminate the Dons and push the Toreros into the semifinals.
The victories by Ka and Holmberg marked the 18
th and 14
th wins for the two freshmen, respectively, capping off impressive debut campaigns on the Hilltop.
