BULLU SALA, Riga – After taking a redshirt for the 2013 University of San Francisco track season, Eva Krchova opened up her summer slate of competition in Europe at the Riga Cup.

The Riga Cup, one of the main highlights of the spring track season in the Baltic countries, attracts top runners from the region and beyond to compete at the highest level.

Krchova, running for her native Czech Republic, finished the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:59.96. Her time was good for third, behind Svetlana Kudilich of Belarus and Latvia's Polina Jelizarova, who was an Olympic finalist during the London 2012 Games.

“This is a promising start to Eva's European season. She redshirted this past spring and is much stronger than she has ever been,” USF coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. “This was her first steeple since last year at the NCAA Championships and 9:59 is a legitimate opener. Eva is such a tough competitor and she is hungry and motivated after sitting out this past spring.”

Krchova is the USF school record holder in the steeplechase after clocking in at 9:54.71 at the European U23 Championships July 20, 2011 in Ostrava, Czech Republic. She will continue to compete throughout the summer, with expected meets including the World University games in Kazan, Russia, and her eye on qualifying for the 2013 World Championships.
