EUGENE, Ore. – Despite a solid race through the first 6,000 meters at Hayward Field, Jana Soethout did not finish the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Track & Field Championships Wednesday night.

Soethout started in the middle of the pack for the first kilometer and then moved toward the back for the next. By the start of the third kilometer, Soethout began working her way back to the middle of the pack, where she stayed until stepping off the track. With eight laps to go, Soethout was in 10th place and running well before she was forced to disqualify herself from the race.

"Jana was running a great race and ran into some difficulty with two miles to go," coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "She is very disappointed, but she will recover from this and has many more opportunities ahead of her."

William & Mary's Elaina Balouris led the first 3,500 meters of the race. A pair of seniors in Iowa State's Betsey Saina and Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton from Wichita State broke away from the main pack by the 4,000 meter mark with Washington's Megan Goethals slightly behind the leaders.

By the 6,000 meter mark, the trio had extended their lead from the chase group and by 8,000 meters it was just Saina and Tuliamuk-Bolton running out front vying for the national title.

Saina, the season's collegiate leader in the 10,000 meters heading into the finals, decided to make her decisive final move with 300 meters remaining in the race. As she pulled away on the backstretch, Saina proved to be no match for the rest of the field, coming away with the easy victory in 33:08.85. Tuliamuk-Bolton remained in second, clocking in at 33:14.12 and Boise State sophomore Emma Bates earned third place with a time of 33:37.13.
