NORTH CONWAY, N.H. – Jose Madera competed in what he called the "toughest race in my life" Sunday in New Hampshire – the 10th NACAC Mountain Running Championships at the Cranmore Hill Climb.
Madera's time of 1:07.19 earned him 28th place overall in the field, and fourth in the
NACAC Mountain Running Championships, which was held in conjunction with the USA Mountain Running Championships. He helped Mexico to 22 overall team points and a third-place finish in the team results.
"It was such an honor and amazing experience to be able to represent my native country," Madera said after the race. "It was a painful race, but I enjoyed every second of it. This was my first time representing Mexico, and I look forward to representing Mexico in future competitions."
Competing alongside 182 athletes from the United States, Mexico and Canada, Madera competed on a challenging lap-course that incorporated fire roads, single track trails and grassy pathways. The three-lap up-and-down course had an approximate 250-meter elevation gain in each lap and a total distance of 12 kilometers.
Madera, entering his senior year at the University of San Francisco, earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors in 2012, and helped the Dons to 12th place in the NCAA West Region during the cross country season. Running the 10,000 meters during the track and field season, Madera earned a place in the field of the NCAA West Regionals, where he finished 27th.
