Second Day at the Battle in the Bay

(10/11/2014) Men's Tennis - BitB - Day 2

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.- The men's tennis team stepped on the California Tennis Club's courts for their second day of play at the Battle in the Bay Classic.

"This was the best team performance our program has ever had at the BBC tournament with three players reaching the round of 16," said head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "The guys really competed hard and were able to support each other through some great wins over top players from good programs."

Vasco Valverde advanced to the quarterfinals after he served up a win in a competitive three set match, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, against St. Mary's student athlete Thomas Hunt. Nils Skajaa played a hard-hitting three set match against Andre Goransson, seeded third in the tournament, to fall short, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.

"Vasco making the quarterfinals was a good showing in his first BBC. Overall the guys did a great job on and off the court as a team," said Pires de Almeida

Play will continue tomorrow, Sunday, with the doubles finals at 10:00 a.m. and singles to follow.

"We are so thankful to all the people that help make this special event possible," said Pires de Almeida.
