SAN FRANCISCO – Competing in USF's only event of the day,
Robert Parker bested his own school record in the javelin Friday afternoon at the Johnny Mathis Invitational.
The redshirt sophomore from San Clemente, Calif., finished the day with a throw of 59.20 meters on his final attempt in the competition, or 194 feet, three inches. He broke the record by 0.03 meters, or 1.18 inches.
Not only did Parker set a new USF benchmark, but he also took first in the event, out-throwing his closest competitor, Christopher Kaiakapu of Chico State, by more than 14 feet. Thus far on the year, Parker has two firsts and one second-place finish under his belt after three competitions in the spring.
"It was another solid performance from Rob today, and we're really happy to bring home another win in the men's javelin," assistant coach Laura Huarte said. "At this point, he's still not competing from a full approach run and the distances he's throwing from a shortened approach are extremely promising."
Freshman
Katoa Ahau placed fourth on the day, finishing with a mark of 51.06 meters. Junior
Cameron Farrell also competed for the Dons in the javelin, and took ninth in the competition after a throw of 43.20 meters.
USF continues at the Johnny Mathis Invitational Saturday, participating in a full slate of track and field disciplines at Cox Stadium on the campus of San Francisco State.
