SAN FRANCISCO –
Eleni Fkiaras raced to a school record in the 400 meter hurdles, besting her own top mark Saturday at Cox Stadium.
The sophomore from San Jose, Calif., placed second in the event, turning in a time of 1:04.67 en route to the record mark. The time topped her previous record by 2.49 seconds and she finished just four one-hundredths out of first place.
Elena Burkard, opening up her track and field season, cruised to a time of 4:27.32 in the 1,500 meters to win the event by nearly a second. The sophomore distance runner from Baiersbronn, Germany, recently earned the title of U23 German National Cross Country champion.
Also competing in the 1,500 meter distance, senior
Maor Tiyouri clocked in at 4:32.65 to take sixth and nab a personal best.
In the sprinting disciplines,
Kamilah Davis sped to third place in both the 100 and 200 meters Saturday. Her times of 12.27 seconds in the 100 and 25.14 seconds in the 200 represent collegiate bests for the redshirt junior from San Jose, Calif.
The Dons were represented on the field by
Laticia Lonon. The junior from Santee, Calif., threw the discus a distance of 38.91 meters, or 127 feet, eight inches. After three straight fouls in the middle of the competition, she posted her event-best on her sixth and final attempt to take second place.
"We had some solid performances on the track today, and we're pleased with the efforts we saw," head coach
Helen Lehman-Winters said. "Laticia is starting to get it rolling in the discus, taking second today. Eleni finally put her hurdle race together and took a huge step forward competitively. Kamilah looked great today. She matched her PR in the 100 and then came back with a PR in the 200.
"Elena and Maor both ran PRs in the 1500, and today was a perfect tune-up to get ready for Stanford in a couple weeks. We are pleased with where the team is right now and will get back to work the next couple weeks before the real racing begins in April."
After competing in just seven of the 19 scored events, the Dons finished third in the team standings at the meet with 62 total points. All told, the Dons finished with 10 top-10 finishes at Cox Stadium.
The month of April starts with a bang as USF will participate in two meets April 4-5. A contingent of Dons will participate in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival while other student-athletes compete at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
