SAN FRANCISCO/STANFORD, Calif. – Headlined by Jose Madera's breakthrough run at the Stanford Invitational, the San Francisco men's track and field team took part in two Bay Area meets and came away from the weekend with record performances and personal bests.

Madera, a redshirt junior from Anaheim, Calif., finished eighth in the 10,000 meters, clocking in at 29:19.23. His speedy time blasted the previous school-best in the event by more than 19 seconds.

"Jose's run at the 10,000 meters was impressive," head coach Helen Lehman-Winters said. "Two years ago, he broke his foot at this meet, last year he ran a personal best at 5,000 meters, and this year he shattered his personal best at the 10k and set a new school record. He took a huge step forward as an athlete this weekend."

Also at Stanford, Sean Gomes earned a top-10 finish in his section of the 800 meters, two seconds off his USF record pace. Competing at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, Jarrett Moore's 800 meter time of 1:53.91 was good for second in his section, and eighth overall out of nearly 100 student-athletes.

Nile Norwood, doubling up in the jumping events and competing at both meets, took first at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in the long jump. After three fouls, Norwood, a junior from Olympia, Wash., recorded the winning leap of 6.99 meters on the fourth and final attempt of the competition. His mark was just two-hundredths of a meter from tying a USF record that has been on the books since 1966.

Many other Dons turned in solid performances at both meets, with Gustavo Mena, Adam Smith and Katoa Ahau among other top-10 finishers on the weekend.

"We are pleased with how so many of our athletes stepped up this weekend," Lehman-Winters noted.  "We had multiple personal bests with many others showing a ton of improvement.  We walked away from this weekend with five NCAA qualifiers and look forward to picking up more later this month."

Next, the Dons are next slated to compete at the Sun Angel Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., Friday and Saturday.
