Complete resultsSAN FRANCISCO – With six school records, the San Francisco women's track and field team closed out the regular season with a banner day at the West Coast Last Chance Meet at Cox Stadium.
The Dons got new school bests at the 100, 200 and 800 meter distances, as well as in the 400 meter hurdles and two relay records.
Asaundra Dalton, a freshman from Oak Park, Mich., can boast four new benchmarks after racing to USF records in the 100 and 200 meters as well as being a member of both relays.
"Our sprint events were really impressive today," head coach
Helen Lehman-Winters said after the meet. "Asaundra ran two individual school records, and then two relay records. She struggled a little bit the last couple meets, so to come in and just get after it and get it done to cap off her freshman year was big-time. She was a beast in the second leg of the relay. And Kamilah ran two PRs in the 100 and 200 as well, and Eleni got the record in the 400 hurdles. Our women got it done today."
Dalton's time of 12.05 in the 100 meters broke her own school best as she finished third in the field, and teammate
Kamilah Davis finished fourth in 12.07, which also bettered the previous USF best. In the 200 meters, Dalton and Davis, a redshirt junior from San Jose, Calif., finished 1-2 with Dalton's time of 24.66 representing a new record.
Eleni Fkiaras and
Lupe Medina joined the powerhouse sprinters for the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relays, and both times the foursome took the track, they bettered the USF record. Fkiaras, a sophomore from San Jose, Calif., also added a new school best in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing third with a mark of 1:03.96.
Hillary Harris came up with a new USF-best in the 800 meters, muscling her way to a time of 2:08.56. The junior from Hillsboro, Ore., finished second in the competition and broke the two-year-old mark of teammate
Eva Krchova by more than half a second.
"I knew that Hillary was capable of running that time, but it's great to see her put it together," Lehman-Winters said. "She ran with such a high level of focus and discipline and went after it. It was a huge run for her."
Along with record performances, the Dons also got personal bests and event victories in other races to punctuate the day's results.
Jana Soethout eased out to an easy victory in the 10,000 meters to open the meet, staying out in front of the field for the duration of the distance.
Elena Burkard cruised to the win in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:20.25, a new personal best and the top time for a Don on the season.
"She looked like a million dollars today, and she's ready to roll," Lehman-Winters said of the sophomore from Baiersbronn, Germany.
Kailey Ulland turned in another win for the Dons, the fourth for USF on the day. Running amongst the leaders for the first three laps of the 3,000 meters, the junior from Kent, Wash., pulled to the lead as the field began to spread out. She took the victory and set a new personal best with a time of 10:49.70.
"I think she got a little more confidence after the 5K two weeks ago at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational," Lehman-Winters explained. "I think she learned how to approach racing in a little bit of a different way. The way she managed herself throughout the entire race was a great way to cap off her season, and go out with a win.
"Today was a true last chance meet in that we had both Division I and Division II qualifying marks on the track today. Along with our solid day, Academy of Art and Cal State Stanislaus had solid runs as well. Across the board I think we had legitimate performances and high quality marks at every distance, and we look forward to hosting this meet again next year."
The Dons now await the final field to be set for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, held May 29-31 in Fayetteville, Ark. The women are in position to secure invitations to compete in every distance from the 800 meters up to the 10K, and send its biggest contingent in USF history to the national stage.
