FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Eva Krchova closed out her collegiate running career at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships Friday night at John McDonnell Field.
As Grace Heymsfield, running for the host squad Arkansas Razorbacks, leapt out to the early lead, Krchova found herself pushed to the back of the 16-woman heat. Krchova, a redshirt senior from Brno, Czech Republic, remained in the trail pack for much of the next five laps before edging up in the field as the race wore on.
After a last-lap kick, Krchova moved up to 11th in the heat but could not catch the top pack to advance to the semifinal round. For Krchova, the race concludes an exceptional career in the Green and Gold.
As a steeplechaser, Friday's contest was her fourth NCAA regional appearance. Three times she advanced to the championships rounds to earn NCAA All-American mentions, and as a freshman in 2010 she reached the finals, placing 13th in the nation. She leaves the Dons as the school record-holder in the event, and was a member of five-straight West Coast Conference cross country title teams. Krchova stands as USF's first individual conference cross country winner, as she led the team to victory in 2012, and a four-time All-WCC First Team cross country performer.
The largest contingent of Dons to ever reach the NCAA Preliminary Championships concludes the action Saturday with three competitors competing at the 5,000 meter distance. Eric Causey will represent the men at 6:05 p.m. PT, while Elena Burkard and Maor Tiyouri will toe the line for the women at 6:45 p.m. PT.
