| The Basics The University of San Francisco is represented for the second straight season by distance runner Jana Soethout at the NCAA Championships, held in Eugene, Ore., June 11-15. Hailing from Cologne, Germany, Soethout entered the regional field with the 26th fastest time in the West. She glided to a fifth-place finish in Fayetteville to earn her trip to Oregon to compete under the lights of Hayward Field in the 10,000 meter finals. The top 48 times and marks from declared student-athletes earned spots in each regional field with the opportunity to compete for a spot in the finals. The top twelve competitors from each individual event advanced to race at Oregon. For Soethout, she will meet up with fierce competition that includes a former champion and three All-Americans from a season ago. Scouting the Field — The field of 24 vying for the title includes: • One former NCAA 10,000 meter champion (Juliet Bottorff - Duke, 2011) • Three women who finished in the top 10 in the 2013 finals (Bottorff - 3rd; Megan Geothals - Washington- 4th, Elaina Balouris - William and Mary - 10th) • Five 2014 conference champions (Bottorff - ACC, Erin Finn - Big 10/Michigan, Kristen Busch - Missouri Valley/Bradley, Katie Moen - Big 12/Iowa State, Cali Roper - C-USA/Rice) • Two women on the collegiate all-time list (Elinor Kirk - UAB - 32:17.05 - 8th, Emma Bates - Boise State - 32:20.83 - 10th) • Two women representing the San Francisco Bay Area (Soethout and Kelsey Santisteban - Cal) • Two women representing West Coast Conference institutions (Soethout and Sheree Shea - Loyola Marymount) Potent Quotables "She competed in the 5,000 earlier this year at the Payton Jordan Invitational and ran 16-flat which was a personal best for her and a school record as well and is coming off a really strong race at 10,000 meters at regionals. She's really at her best when it matters most and excited to go out and just continue working on what she's worked on all season long - concentrating on getting better and going out and staying in the moment and getting the most out of her fitness. "She's an aerobic machine and I think that will definitely help her when she gets to Eugene this week. When she locks into a pace, she's able to sustain that pace. I think it will be more of a matter of her being able to come off that pace and run hard in the last 2K or 3K of the race whenever it's going to open up. It will all be about competing and getting the most out of yourself on Thursday evening. I'm very confident in her ability to respond to the situation and to stay in the moment, stay relaxed and see what she can accomplish in that field." - head coach Helen Lehman-Winters "The training is getting better and better and the whole season was kind of building to this. We were getting better in each race and now I'm at the top of my shape in the season and it's perfect. It's important to peak now because it's the most important part of the season. "It's good to be coached by Helen. She's definitely one of the hardest coaches I've had in my career so far but I think that's also a good thing because she brings us where we are and that's why I'm here now. I'm really excited going to the NCAA Finals because that's the ultimate goal of the season, where you want to go to. It's great that I did good at regionals, and now I want to go to compete at the final and give it my best." - Jana Soethout | USF Schedule of Events Thursday: Women's 10,000 Meters - Finals (7:15 p.m.) Jana Soethout The Road to the Finals — Jana Soethout • Senior • Cologne, Germany 10,000 Meters • Regional mark: 34:09.69 • Rank in finals field: 21 Second appearance in an NCAA Championship field in as many tries ...
