SAN FRANCISCO –– After two weeks off from tournament play, the Dons return to action on Thursday, competing in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Seattle, Wash. Matches begin on Thursday morning and conclude on Monday, Oct. 26.Â
Participating for USF in singles will be Nils Skajaa, Vasco Valverde, Thomas Takemoto, Ryan Marker, Woravin Kumthonkittikul and Jerod Mah. In the doubles draw, Skajaa and Valverde will team up, with Kumthonkittikul/Takemoto and Marker/Mah making up the other two pairings.
Valverde will open up play for the Dons on Thursday at 8 a.m., where he will face off against Portland State's Will Cochrane at the Nordstrom Tennis Center (NTC). At 10:15 a.m at the Eastside Tennis Center (ETC), Marker will play Portland's Pierre Garcia with Kumthonkittikul squaring off against Nathan Boniel of Portland State. In the last morning match of the day, Takemoto will take on Portland State's Nacor Ibanez at 11:45 a.m. at ETC. During the afternoon, Mah will play Ethan Lopez of Portland State at 1:15 p.m. at ETC, with Skajaa wrapping up Thursday play for the Dons at 2:00 p.m. against Youssef Hassan of Fresno State at NTC.
On the doubles side, Skajaa and Valverde have a first round bye and will play the winner between Sacramento State's Christopher Clayton/Donald Hall and Stanford's Michael Genender/Anthony Tsodikov on Friday at 4:00 p.m. On Friday at 2:00 p.m., Mah and Marker will face off against Ashot Khacharyan and Robert Seby of rival Santa Clara. The pair of Takemoto and Kumthonkittikul received a bye in the first round and will play the winner of Washington's Rishabh Raman/Enzo Sommer and Eastern Washington's Wacil Bendjelti/Vuk Vuckovic on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
In total, 16 schools will be showcased in singles and doubles, with seven student-athletes ranked in the top 150 by the ITA. Washington's Mitch Stewart (No. 62) and Jake Douglas (No. 92), Cal's Florian Lakat (No. 36) and Filip Bergevi (No. 64), Oregon's Daan Maasland (No. 67), Pacific's Miguel Diaz (No. 124) and Stanford's David Hsu (No. 96) will be represented in the field.
Matches will take place at three venues including the Eastside Tennis Center in Kirkland on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23, the Seattle Tennis Club on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 and the Nordstrom Tennis Center all five days.Â
