Watch the Video SAN FRANCISCO – The USF women's soccer team had six student-athletes earn All-West Coast Conference honors, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. The list includes WCC Co-Defender of the Year
Ali Schaffer, who also earned second-team honors, first-team honorees
Jessica Nakae and
Madalyn Schiffel, and honorable mention selections
Alex Alugas,
Amanda Whittle, and
Samantha Jehnings, who also earned a spot on the all-freshman team.
The six All-WCC recipients ties the program record for most in a season; the Dons also had six all-conference performers in 2006.
Schaffer becomes the first Don to ever win a major conference award, while Nakae becomes the first USF player since Shellie Silva (1992-1993) to earn back-to-back first-team honors. Jehnings' selection to the all-freshman team marks the fifth time in the past six seasons the Dons have had a member on the all-freshman squad.
Schaffer (Santa Rosa, Calif. / Maria Carrillo HS), a junior defender, earned the first All-WCC honor of her career after starting all 20 games in the Dons' defensive backfield, playing virtually every minute. As the center back, Schaffer anchored a USF defense that tied for second in the WCC with a school-record 10 shutouts overall and ranked third in goals allowed (15) and goals against average (0.72). She shared co-defender of the year recognition with LMU's Callie Taylor.
Nakae (Torrance, Calif. / South HS), a junior midfielder, made her greatest impact facilitating for her teammates in an attacking midfield role. Nakae started all 20 matches, registering one goal and one assist during WCC play. Her lone goal during conference play came when she netted the game-winner in the 82
nd minute of USF's 2-1 upset over No. 5 BYU. Nakae earned WCC Player of the Week honors on Oct. 27. She previously earned first-team recognition last year, as well as honorable mention and all-freshman honors in 2013.
Schiffel, a senior keeper from Roseville, Calif. (Cornerstone HS), took home her first career first-team nod after recording a 0.98 goals against average in WCC play to go along with three shutouts in conference action, which ranked fourth. She also boasted a .791 save percentage with 34 saves in WCC play. Over the course of the year, Schiffel became USF's career leader in shutouts (23), goalkeeper wins (29), minutes played in goal (6,514), while her overall goals against average of 0.72 this season was just shy of the USF single season mark of 0.69 set by Amy Voiland (1996).
Alugas (Los Altos, Calf. / The King's Academy) earned her first all-conference honor after proving a vital asset as a wing midfielder. Alugas started 18 of the team's 20 contests and had one assist in WCC play, but tallied one goal and two assists overall.
Jehnings, a redshirt freshman out of Canyon Country, Calif. (Golden Valley HS), led the Dons in scoring on the year, netting four goals in WCC play – ranking her third in the conference – and seven goals with two assists overall. She started 10 of the team's 20 games, while her 16 points overall ranked fifth in the WCC.
Whittle, another South High School product out of Torrance, Calif., earned honorable mention honors for the second consecutive year after tallying a goal and an assist in WCC play. As Alugas' counterpart on the opposite wing, Whittle helped create attacking opportunities for the Dons. She had career-highs in goals (3) – including two game-winners - and assists (5) overall this year, while her five assists overall tied for third-best in the WCC.
The Dons finished the year with a program-best 13-4-3 record overall and a 7-2-0 mark in conference play, good for the highest finish in program history, a second-place tie with Loyola Marymount.
