Flushing, NY –– Before returning back to the Hilltop from the Big Apple, seniors
Nils Skajaa and
Vasco Valverde had one more shot to pick up a win at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Playing against UAB's Luiz Pinto and Christian Coetzee, the Dons duo battled back to earn a hard-fought victory in a consolation match on Friday evening.
After dropping the first set 3-6, the Dons evened the match by winning the second set in a dominating fashion, 6-1. Playing in its third tiebreaking set in two days, the Dons were determined to come away with a win. After taking a 9-6 lead in the third set, the Blazers stormed back to tie it at 9 apiece. USF then took command to win the third set 13-11 and come away with a win against a tough UAB team.
"It was very big to get a win at Nationals and be so competitive in all of our matches," said head men's coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida.
