LAKESIDE, Calif. -- USF's men's golf team opened its spring season with a 10th place finish at the Barona Collegiate Cup, hosted by San Diego State in Lakeside.

The Dons strung together rounds of 296-297-287 to finish at 880 (+16) for the 54-hole event, good for 10th place in the 13 team field.

USF's score was well off the pace of first place San Diego State, which ran away from the field to capture the team title with a 31-under score of 883. The Aztecs finished 12 strokes clear of second place San Diego at 845 (-19).

San Diego State's Xander Schauffele claimed medalist honors with a 17-under score of 1999, earning a three-stroke victory over teammate Nahum Mendoza. After opening with a 1-under 71, Schauffele took hold of the individual title with back-to-back 64s.

Freshman Jalen Griffin was USF's top finisher with a three-under score of 213. Griffin moved up eight spots on the leaderboard after firing a final round 68 on Tuesday morning, his lowest round in his young collegiate career.

USF No. 1 Jobim Carlos had an up-and-down tournament with rounds of 71-80-70 and finished tied for 42nd at 221 (+5).

Junior Sebastian Crookall-Nixon closed with a final round 74 and finished eight over for the tournament at 224, good for a tie for 55th place. Crookall-Nixon rebounded from an opening round 79 to fire a 71 over his second 18 on Monday.

Emil Liljeroth, making his first start of the 2014-15 season, tied for 62nd at 227 (+11) after rounds of 76-74-77.

Kraig McLeod also made his season debut in Lakeside and finished 72nd at 231 (+15) on rounds of 76-80-75.

USF will return to action on Feb. 20 as the Dons join the field at the Wyoming Desert Classic, which will be held at the Classic Club in Palm Desert.
