USF Places 5th at Silverado Invitational

Napa, Calif. –– On the final day of the Silverado Invitational, USF dropped five of six matches to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, with Vasco Valverde and Ryan Marker picking up the lone win for the Dons in the No. 2 doubles match.

USF finished the tournament in fifth place, with freshman Marker finishing second in the No. 4 singles flight.

Oklahoma State, who collected 12 wins throughout the weekend, took home the team title. The Cowboys were led by Jurence Mendoza and Tristan Meraut, who won the No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles flights.

The Dons mixed up their doubles teams on Sunday, with Nils Skajaa playing No. 1 alongside Thomas Takemoto. The two started off the match well but couldn't hold off Lukas Finzelberg and Mendoza and lost 8-6. Valverde and Marker, paired together for the first time, beat a more experienced OSU team, 8-6, setting each other up well at the net to secure the win.

USF struggled in their singles matches, with Skajaa, Takemoto and Valverde all losing in straight sets. Marker, going for his third-straight singles win, battled hard against OSU's junior Nathan Roper. After losing his first set, Marker dominated in the second set, 6-1, but lost in a tiebreaker 10-5 during the third set.

"Overall, this was a great experience of tough matches for our guys to face," said head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Now we look forward to the Battle in the Bay Classic."
