USF Picks up First Win of 2016

Honolulu, HI –– The USF men's tennis team picked up its first win of 2016, taking down the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 4-2 on Saturday morning. With the win, the Dons move to 1-1 on the year.

For the second day in a row, the Dons earned the first doubles win of the day as Tynan Maguire and Christian Brockstedt handled Hawaii's Joakim Pinola and Ruben Blattner, 6-2. However, the Rainbow Warriors fought back in the remaining doubles matches, beating the Dons' No. 1 and No. 3 pairs. Seniors Nils Skajaa and Vasco Valverde struggled against Felix Albert and Kai Wehnelt, falling 4-6. After that, Ryan Marker and Thomas Takemoto took a 4-1 lead against Marcel Chan and Nikolai Storch but were unable to hold on and lost in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (2).

Needing a strong performance in singles to pick a win, the Dons came to play. Valverde set the tone in No. 3 singles with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over Chan. Marker continued the momentum at No. 4 with a straight set, 6-2, 6-2 win to push the Dons up 2-1 in the match.

Batting a cold, Takemoto fought hard but fell to Wehnelt and suffered a 2-6, 4-6 loss in the No. 2 spot. With the match even at 2-2, Woravin Kumthonkittikul came through in the clutch with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Pinola at No. 6 to push the Dons ahead 3-2. Playing in just his second singles match at the collegiate level, Maguire rose to the occassion at No. 5 singles. The freshman took the first set 6-1 over Blattner but the Rainbow Warrior battled back to take the second set 6-4. Needing a win in the third set to clinch the match, Maguire overpowered Blattner, winning the third set 6-2 to clinch the win for the Dons.
