SPOKANE, Wash. – The San Francisco volleyball team slowly gained momentum throughout the afternoon, but couldn't overcome solid hitting by Gonzaga's Emmy Allen as the Dons fell 3-0 at the Martin Centre on Saturday afternoon.
The Dons' offense was paced by their freshman duo with a 10-kill day for
Tyna Adamcikova, and eight kills for
Kate Ashman. A trio of USF players combined for 29 assists, led by
Montana Green's 12-assist effort.
Kim Gutierrez led the defense with 14 kills, and
Nora Buvarp Lavik finished with three blocks, and Adamcikova and
Marjolijn Oskam each contributed two stuffs apiece.
Gonzaga started the match on a tear, leading the entire first set before taking the win 25-16. In the second, USF hung tough, recording the 7-7 tie after a kill for Oskam off the assist from
Trish Koutsoukos. The teams remained close through much of the set with the Bulldogs as Adamcikova's point off the pass from Gutierrez made the frame 12-11 in favor of the home team. Gonzaga closed out the second set 25-18, but USF was at the ready in the third.
After halftime, USF's Lavik opened the action with a solo block and senior
Emily Reed scored the second point of the frame. The Dons held the 12-10 lead with Adamcikova at the serve, but the Bulldogs rallied for the 13-12 advantage after Allen and Katelyn Oppio teamed up for the block. Neither the Dons or Bulldogs could create any space with ties at 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 apiece before Gonzaga strung together three straight to go ahead late in the frame, and come away with the 25-22 victory to close the match.
Up next for the Dons is a home date against Bay Area rival Santa Clara on Friday at 7 p.m. The game is a part of Pink Week festivities, and all fans wearing pink enter the match for free. The Dons are partnering with Bay Area non-profit HERS Breast Cancer Foundation to bring awareness and raise money for the cause.
