SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco cross country team has seen its hard work rewarded in the USTFCCCA rankings this week, as the men and women continue to climb to distinction both regionally and nationally.
The USF women soared up six spots in the national coaches' poll jumping to No. 13 in the NCAA with 207 point received in the weekly voting after the then-No. 19 Dons took sixth place at the high-octane Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday. The Dons surpassed conference foe BYU, Eastern Michigan, Oklahoma State, Yale, Michigan State and Boise State, and now only five spots separate USF and WCC opponent Portland.
The women now stand at fourth regionally after improving two spots in the West Region rankings. USF now only trails the national No. 2 Washington, No. 5 Oregon and the No. 8 Pilots in the region. The Dons' fourth-place ranking in the West matches the program-best regional mark, achieved for three weeks during the 2013 season.
The men move up a spot to No. 8 in the region, the second WCC school in the West rankings. One of the toughest sections in the country, the shakeup in the West saw former No. 1 Portland slide to fourth to get leapfrogged by a trio of PAC-12 schools. The Dons' move was a swap from ninth with Bay Area foe California, after the USF men edged out the Bears at the Adidas Pre-Nationals meet on Saturday. The Dons are just one spot out of their highest ever regional ranking, seen in Week 4 of the 2015 campaign.
The next regional poll will be revealed on Oct. 31, with updated national rankings unveiled on Nov. 1 after conference action has concluded across the country.
The postseason campaign looms for the USF men and women as the squads head to San Diego, Calif., for the WCC Championships on Oct. 28, before competing at the NCAA West Regionals (Nov. 11) and Championships (Nov. 19).
