SAN FRANCISCO - USF's men's and women's basketball teams made their season debuts at the Fifth Annual Hilltop HoopSFest held tonight inside War Memorial at The Sobrato Center. Both teams put together an impressive highlight reel in front of the spirited crowd on the Hilltop.
Â
Both teams under first-year head coaches
Kyle Smith and
Molly Goodenbour were in midseason form and the competition was fierce.
Â
Kalyn Simon showed tremendous coordination and dexterity in taking down
Ronnie Boyce in a game of Cookie Face. Rau Gultekin had 7-0 freshman
Jimbo Lull all wrapped up in Make a Mummy. Freshmen
Chance Anderson was at the top of his game in Angry Elephants and
Nia Alexander got the better of
Nick Loew in the Junk in the Trunk Contest.
Â
The teams along with fellow students engaged in various basketball skills competitions, highlighted by the sharp-shooting team of
Jordan Ratinho and
Rachel Howard. Ratinho drilled 16 three balls in 30 seconds to lead his team to the title.
Â
Nate Renfro easily defended his title in the slam dunk completion where to downed
Charles Minlend in the finals with a Dr. J-like tomahawk slam from the free throw line. Renfro registered perfect scores in each of his rounds from the judges, which included USF legend Bill Cartwright.
Â
Led by
Ninni Salmi, the ladies got the better of the men's team in the lip sync, dance-off with a spirited rendition of "Tonight." However, it was men's head coach
Kyle Smith who brought down the house with his rendition of the Digital Underground's smash hit, "The Humpty Dance".
Â
Prizes such as Apple TVs were awarded to fans with the best Tweets during the festivities.
Â
Both men's and women's teams will open their seasons on Nov. 11 with a doubleheader at The Sobrato Center. The women will tip the night off against Cal State-Sacramento at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men's game against Illinois-Chicago at 8.
