Portland, Ore. –– After picking up back-to-back wins against George Washington and Saint Mary's, the USF men's tennis team was unable to earn its third straight win, as the Dons fell to Portland 6-0 on Friday morning.
In doubles action, the Pilots claimed the point with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. At No. 2, Kent Andreasen and Alex Wallace defeated USF's
Jason Lee and
Ryan Marker, 6-1. Portland then took the match at No. 1 with Michail Pervolarakis and Pierre Garcia taking down
Nils Skajaa and
Vasco Valverde, 7-5.
The Pilots stretched the lead in singles, as Pierre Garcia beat Valverde, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Skajaa, who entered the match having won four straight at No. 1, took Pervolarakis to two tie-breaking sets but lost 7-5, 7-5. With a 3-0 lead, Portland then clinched the match at No. 2, with Mathieu Garcia earning a 6-3, 6-4 win over Marker.
"In singles, we battled hard and lost close on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 courts," said head men's tennis coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Their guys dug deep and played better on the big points than we did. I give total credit to their guys."
The Dons are back at on Saturday to face Gonzaga at 12 P.M. in Spokane.
