Mt. SAC Headlines Busy Weekend on the Track

SAN FRANICSCO – The San Francisco track and field teams send a strong contingent into the weekend's events, competing at the Mt. SAC Relays, the Beach Invitational and Woody Wilson Invitational all weekend long.
The Dons are fresh off two meets in the Bay Area where USF runners earned two school records and 11 marks that currently stand in the Top 50 of the NCAA West Outdoor Qualifying Lists.
"Our primary goal is to make progress, and go get more kids qualified for the NCAA Championships. That's really what it's all about," noted head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We got off to a good start at Stanford, and we're looking forward to continue that momentum."
All told, the Dons have five women in the nation's top 95 performance lists, with Charlotte Taylor's 10K time of 33:25.09 landing in the 11th spot, and four student-athletes entering the top 95 in the 5,000 meters. Elena Burkard makes the list in both the 1,500 and 5,000.
On the men's side, Hugh Nicklason's name can be found twice (800 and 1,500), with four other men currently sitting on the national ranking lists. Matt Leach and Alex Short are 24th and 31st respectively in the 10,000 meters, after stellar outings at the Stanford Invitational. Mohamed Aziz currently rates 46th in the west in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:09.85, as he looks to improve his time at the Mt. SAC Relays.
The 58th Mt. SAC Relays, one of the nation's premier events, will be held at held at Cerritos College Falcon Stadium in Norwalk, Calif., due to renovations to historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium. The new state of the art facility is expected to be part of "Project 2020."
Project 2020's two main components include the 62 million dollar renovation of Mt. SAC's historic Hilmer Lodge Stadium and the college's intention to bid for the 2020 US Olympic Track and Field Trials. The project will transform the facility into a state-of-the-art track and field/cross country venue. The renovation will allow Mt. SAC the opportunity to bid for additional special events, including not only the 2020 Olympic Trials, but also the USA Track and Field National Championships.
USF is anticipating a solid showing up and down the lineup in Southern California. Ryan Driscoll (3,000 m SC) and Isabelle Brauer (10K) make their outdoor debuts, while Nicklason, Shepherd and Kate Jamboretz look to improve upon their qualification standings. Emma Stahr will double up on meets, competing in the 800 at Mt. SAC on Friday and stretching the distance to 1,500 meters at the Beach Invitational on Saturday.
Closer to home, the Dons send nine student-athletes to compete at the Woody Wilson Classic, hosted by UC Davis. Men's and women's throwers Katoa Ahau, JoJo Ananouko, Alia Mahuna and Gwyn Price will start off the action on Saturday in the javelin. Five student-athletes are set to run the track, highlighted by school record holder Eleni Fkiaras, who is seeking even more improvement in her time in the 400 meter hurdles at the event.
In the latest USTFCCCA regional polls which were released April 11, the USF men are 20th in the West Region aided my Leach's 10K time of 29:14.36, which stands as the sixth-best mark in the region on the season. The women moved up to 27th in the region with Taylor's 10K coming in fourth in the West. Both the men and women are the second-highest rated WCC team, following Portland.
