Dons Drop Heartbreaker to Santa Clara, 4-3

SAN FRANCISCO -- USF came within a point of sending out seniors Nils Skajaa, Thomas Takemoto, Jason Lee and Vasco Valverde on a high note in their final home match, but Santa Clara dashed the Dons Senior Day party and escaped with a 4-3 victory at the Olympic Club.

The Broncos claimed two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match and then the two teams split six singles matches, giving Santa Clara a hard-fought 4-3 victory.

Santa Clara (10-10, 3-3 WCC) took a 1-0 lead in the match as tlhe doubles teams of Ashot Khacharyan and Max Hernandez along with Andrew Gu and Kamran Kahn picked up wins on courts 3 and 2, negatiing Nils Skajaa's and Vasco Valverde's win on court 1. USF's tanden of Thomas Takemoto and Christian Brockstedt served for the match on court 2 against Gu and Kahn only to get broken and eventually lose in a tie breaker.

Tynan Maguire's 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kahn on court 5 evened the match at 1-1, but the Broncos regained the lead as Gu turned back Takemoto, 6-2, 6-3 on court 3. Kharcharyan put the Dons in a 3-1 hole with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Skajaa in court 1. Wins by Valverde and Woravin Kumthonkittikul on courts 4 and 6 evened the match at 3-3, setting up the decisive contest on court No. 2 between USF's Ryan Marker and Robert Seby.

Marker won the first set 7-5 and served for the match in set two, Seby fended off match point and eventually took the second set 7-5 and blitzed Marker 6-0 in the third to clinch the match for Santa Clara.

It was the final home match for seniors Skajaa, Valverde, Lee and Takemoto.

The Dons (4-18, 1-6) will wrap up the regular season next weekend with matches at Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.
