STANFORD, Calif. – The San Francisco track and field team raced to strong results at the Stanford Twilight on Friday night, with student-athletes breaking school records and producing NCAA qualifying marks around the track.
The women's 5,000 meters thrust the Dons in the spotlight, as junior Charlotte Taylor outpaced the competition to take first place with a time of 16:05.88. Her nearest competitor crossed the line nearly five seconds later and was quickly followed by two-time NCAA 5,000 meter runner up Aisling Cuffe and Boise State All-American Tansey Lystad. USF's Weronika Pyzik finished in sixth with a new personal best of 16:18.27, and teammate Daryl Phill's finish in 16:42.03 also counts as a personal best.
Taylor's time stands in 17th in the West, with Pyzik holding down the 33rd spot on the qualifying lists.
Hugh Nicklason set his second school record, earning the distinction in the 1,500 meters after racing to a time of 3:44.12 and a ninth-place finish in the strong field. Overall event winner, Joshua Thompson of Oklahoma State, came away with the third-fastest time of the year in the West, with Nicklason's mark earning him 31st on the NCAA descending order lists.
Matt Leach and Alex Short laced up for the Dons in the 5,000 with each coming away from the track with personal best performances in the event. Leach finished in 14:05.87, good for ninth, while Short's mark of 14:13.48 stood in 13th on the night.
In the field, freshman thrower JoJo Ananouko continues to build up new school bests in the javelin. Friday's hurl of 40.35 meters outdistanced her previous record in the event by nearly four meters.
The top 48 declared student-athletes from both the East and West in each event are eligible to participate in the NCAA Regional Championships. As it stands now, USF is in good position to head to the West Regional with a monster number of qualifiers.
Currently, Nicklason (800m – 39th; 1,500 m – 31st), Leach (5,000 m – 42nd, 10,000 m – 17th), Short (10,000 m – 23rd), Ryan Driscoll (3,000 m SC – 21st), Mohamed Aziz (3,000 m SC – 41st), Taylor (5,000 m – 17th, 10,000 m – 8th), Pyzik (5,000 m – 33rd), Elena Burkard (5,000 m – 34th) and Frederique LaTraverse (10,000 m – 42nd) are in position to make the field, with many more on the bubble with less than a month remaining in the regular season.
USF has a busy week on horizon with runners expected to compete at the Drake Invitational, Penn Relays and Payton Jordan Invitational to round out the month of April.
