USF Swept by BYU, 4-0

SAN FRANCISCO -- USF's men's tennis team played its second match in as many days against one of WCC's top squads and fell to BYU, 4-0 this afternoon at the Broadway Tennis Center. The match was moved indoors due to the wet weather in the Bay Area.

BYU (16-5, 5-1 WCC) claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions and picked up three singles victories to win the match, 4-0.

The team of Jeremy Burgeois and Keaton Cullimore got the Cougars on the board with a 6-4 victory over USF's Ryan Marker and Woravin Kumthonkittikul, 6-4, despite the Dons duo being up two break points. USF battled back as the Dons top tandem of Nils Skajaa and Vasco Valverde took out Shane Monroe and Andry Goryachkov, 6-4. However, the Cougars claimed the doubles point when the team of John Pearce and Jacob Sullivan fought off a match point and then rallied to defeat Christian Brockstedt and Thomas Takemoto, 7-5 on court No. 2.

Aidan Carrazedo gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Brockstedt at No. 6 singles. Goryachkov's 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Valverde at the No. 4 position gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead and all eyes then turned to court No. 1 and the match between USF's Nils Skajaa and BYU's Shane Monroe. After Monroe took the first set, 6-2, Skajaa roared back to even the match with a 6-3 victory in the second. Monroe fought off a match point and eventually prevailed 7-6 (6) in the third-set tie breaker to clinch the match for the Cougars.

The other singles matches were suspended.

"It was a closer match than yesterday's against San Diego," said USF head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Vasco and Nils played a solid match coming back from a break down. At No. 3 doubles, we were up two breaks but couldn't close it out. We also served for first sets at No. 3 and 4 singles but couldn't convert. BYU dug a little deeper at the end."

USF will return to action on Tuesday when the Dons travel down the Peninsula to face Stanford beginning at 3:30 p.m.
