SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco men's tennis team fell just short against regional foe UC Davis in its spring home opener, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Aggies on Friday afternoon.
The match was tightly contested from the outset, beginning with doubles action. The UC Davis duo of Alec Adamson and Bryce McKelvie got on the board first with a 7-5 win at the No. 2 position. Then, USF's top pairing of
Johan Joenhagen and
Mert Zincirli rallied back with a 6-4 win against the region's seventh-ranked tandem of Tommy Lam and David Goulak. The No. 3 battle went to extra points before the paring from UC Davis edged out the 7-6(4) victory on the day to give the Aggies the match lead.
In singles play, UC Davis again took the first point to extend the overall lead. USF's No. 4 player,
Oliver Poysti downed Everett Maltby, 6-2, 6-4, to put the Dons on the board and playing from the No. 1 position, Joenhagen defeated McKelvie in straight sets to tie the match at two apiece.
The Aggies rolled off the next two points to clinch the match before Zincirli got the best of James Wade in come-from-behind fashion with a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) to put the final score at 4-3 in favor of the visitors. Despite the team loss, Joenhagen and Zincirli both earned wins in both singles and doubles on the day.
Next up, the Dons look to earn their first win of the spring on the home courts of the California Tennis Club, taking on Fresno State Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.
