MGOLF | Dons Wrap fall season at Saint Mary’s Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The fall season is coming to a conclusion this week for the University of San Francisco men's golf team, and the Dons will do it in style playing in the Saint Mary's Invitational at the legendary Poppy Hills Golf Course.
EVENT INFO — The Saint Mary's Invitational will be held at the par-71, 7,002-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif. Eighteen holes will be played each day between Monday and Wednesday (Nov. 6-8). Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
FIELD — In addition to the Dons, the 18-team field also includes: Arizona, BYU, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Oregon State, Saint Mary's, San Diego State, Santa Clara, Stanford, Texas State, Toledo, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, USC, UT-Arlington, and Washington State.
USF LINEUP — The Dons' lineup will feature freshman Toby Briggs, senior Henry Chung, freshman Alex Chin, freshman Soren Lind, and sophomore Tim Widing.
EVENT HISTORY — This marks the 12th time Saint Mary's has hosted the Saint Mary's Invitational, it has also been played at Pebble Beach and Bayonet Golf Course. For the last three years it has been held at Poppy Hills. USF's best finish in the event came in 2008 when the Dons took first overall with a +3 855 at Poppy Hills, former Don Domingo Jojola was tournament champion at six-under, 207. Last season, USF took third in the even with a team score of 881.
LAST TIME OUT — USF last competed a month ago at the MacKenzie Invitational hosted by Cal at the Meadow Club. Battling difficult conditions due to the fires in Northern California, the Dons finished 13th, going 5-over with a team score of 857. Chung was the Dons' top finisher at one-over 214, good enough for a tie at 33rd.
ROSTER — The Dons' nine-man roster breakdown is one graduate student, three seniors, a junior, a sophomore, and three freshmen. In all three of the Dons' fall tournaments, USF has featured a lineup of three under classmen and two seniors. This weekend they are going with a lineup that features four underclassmen, and one senior. Chin will be making his collegiate debut for the Dons on Monday. Chung, who has played in all of the fall events this season, played in all nine events for USF last season, and recorded a stroke average if 72.8, which was the third-lowest on the team of players who competed in at least half of the events. His lone top-10 finish came at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills, where he tied for sixth with a 3-over score of 216 (74-70-72).
KENNEDY — Jack Kennedy begins his third season working with the men's golf program. After serving as an assistant coach with both programs, Kennedy was elevated to interim men's head coach in January of 2017. Kennedy returned to the Hilltop in the fall of 2013 after serving one year as an assistant men's basketball coach at San Jose State. Prior to his appointment at San Jose State, Kennedy served in various capacities with USF's men's basketball program for five seasons from 2008-12. He served as a graduate assistant coach on Rex Walters' staff for two seasons (2008-10) before being promoted to director of basketball operations. He moved into a full-time coaching capacity for the 2012-13 campaign. A four-year golf letter winner at Grinnell (Iowa) College, Kennedy earned first team All-Midwest Conference honors in 2006. He also played basketball for the Pioneers under legendary head coach David Arseneault. During his sophomore season, Grinnell led the nation in scoring with a then NCAA-record 126.2 points per game.
HOME EVENTS — The Dons will host one tournament this season, the MacKenzie Match Play Tournament March 12-13 at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. Last season, USF hosted the USF Olympic Invitational at the Olympic Club.
