SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's tennis team was nipped by the visiting Northern Arizona Lumberjacks 4-2 on a wet weekend in the Bay Area at The Olympic Club.
"We had our chances and built some momentum but just couldn't close it out," noted head coach
Hilary Somers after the match. "We competed well, but didn't execute when it was necessary."
The Lumberjacks got on the board first after a shortened match on Court 1, but Joselyn Treyes-Albarracin quickly knotted the score after taking her battle with Brandy Walker by a tally of 6-4, 6-3 on Court 4.
Northern Arizona again edged out to the lead at the No. 2 position with a straight-set victory, and again the Dons responded as
Hanna Borjeson netted the 7-5, 6-3 win over Marta Lewandowska at No. 5. Next to finish was Court 3, as Blanka Szavay registered the come-from-behind win for the Lumberjacks after dropping the first set of the day to
Genevieve McCloskey 6-3.
The final opportunity to finish with the tie came in the sixth spot in the lineup, another three-set battle. USF's
Sarina Chhabra took the first set 6-2 before falling 6-3, 6-0 in the final frames as Northern Arizona finished with the 4-2 win on the day.
Up next for the Dons is a Thursday match at San Jose State, previously rescheduled from earlier rains to open the month of February.
