Dons Play Strong with Shifted Lineup

SAN JOSE, Calif. – In a make-up match, the San Francisco women's tennis team battled a tough San Jose State squad on Thursday at the Alamaden Valley Athletic Club before falling to the Spartans 5-2 on the day.

Originally slated to be played in early February but pushed back due to inclement weather, the Dons saw a new lineup take the court as this season's player on Court 1, Anna Sokiran, was unavailable. With the shuffle in position across the lineup, the Dons took wins at the No. 2 and 4 spots on the day and battled to the finish at No. 1.

USF's first point of the day came from the consistent hand of Hanna Borjeson. The sophomore from Gothenburg, Sweden, eased to the 6-3, 6-2 victory over Gaelle Ray at the No. 4 position, her sixth consecutive victory and fifth straight-set win of the year.

Genevieve McCloskey, a senior from Perth, Australia, also recorded the win on the afternoon, defeating Marie Klocker 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 as she stepped up on Court 2 for the Dons. Nearly notching the upset for USF was freshman Emily Maxfield, who raced out to the 6-3 first-set victory over 56th-ranked Sybille Gauvain at the No. 1 spot. Gauvain came back to take set two and the third went down to the wire before the Spartans eventually claimed the point, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4).

"Today was a test and good opportunity for our players to step up and accept a challenge as they all had to move up a position as Anna was out for singles," noted USF head coach Hilary Somers. "Gen closed out a tough match in three sets against a great defender that always plays so tough, and it was a great win for Gen.

"Emily played a very high-level and experienced player at one and played her best tennis as a Don in the first set.  Although she didn't pull out the match in the superbreaker for the third set, the match will give her confidence moving forward.  Hanna continued her singles streak with her sixth win in a row."

Next up, the Dons take on Middle Tennessee State on March 5 at 3 p.m., at The Olympic Club.
