SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco men's tennis team ran into a stout Yale squad on Friday afternoon at the California Tennis Club, falling to the Bulldogs 4-0 on a beautiful spring day in the City by the Bay.
The Dons opened the day with a bright spot on the doubles courts, as Oliver Poysti and Paul Giraud teamed up to take down Tyler Lu and Ziqi Wang, 6-4, on Court 3. At No. 2, Ryan Marker and Jarod Mah had a shot to secure the doubles point before dropping the tight match to Yale's duo, 7-5.
"In singles, we got out toughed in all first sets," said USF head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Our guys battled back and we won the second on No. 5 and looked like we would win sets on 1 and 3, but Yale edged us out on 6, then 4 and finally 2 for the clinch."
Giraud continued his solid play on the doubles court in his singles match on Court 5. After falling in the first set to opponent Ryan Cheng, he rebounded for the 6-3 second-set win before play was halted midway through the third.
USF continues its stretch of five home matches, taking on Pacific Northwest foes in the coming week. First, the Dons welcome Portland on Friday at 1 p.m., and then take on Gonzaga on Saturday at 1 p.m. The homestand continues to close the month as USF battles non-conference opponents Drexel on March on March 28 and Cal Poly on March 31.
