SAN FRANCISCO – After dropping the doubles point to start the day, USF rattled off the next four in singles action to ease to the 4-1 victory over Drexel in a Tuesday afternoon match on the courts of The Olympic Club.
USF opened the singles action by securing the point on Court 3 as
Ryan Marker netted the straight-set victory. Also downing his opponent in two,
Mert Zincirli handed Drexel's Hamza Laalej the 6-1, 6-3 loss at the No. 1 position in the lineup.
Then,
Johan Joenhagen served up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Balaji Lakshmanan at No. 2 to put USF on the precipice of the team victory. The Dons got the clinching point of the day from the racquet of sophomore
Jerod Mah. Playing in the No. 6 position in the lineup, the San Rafael, Calif. native, downed Drexel's Daniil Ginzburg, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3, to seal the win for USF. The victory marks the first clinch, and in fact, the first dual match win of Mah's collegiate career for the Dons.
The win was the second straight for the Dons, who now move to 6-11 on the year. Meanwhile, Drexel now stands at 10-5 in dual match play.
USF closes out its five-match homestand hosting Cal Poly at the California Tennis Club on Friday at 1 p.m., its final non-conference battle of the spring. The Dons stay in the Bay Area for the next four conference matches, traveling to Saint Mary's on for a match in Moraga on Sunday at 2 p.m.
