SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco women's tennis team could not take advantage of a hot start to the day, as the visiting San Diego Toreros notched a 4-2 victory on Friday at The Olympic Club.
The Dons earned the doubles point for the second-straight match, also taking the pairs score in USF's victory over Santa Clara last weekend. USF's
Margarita Treyes and
Hanna Borjeson quickly dispatched Maria-Paula Torres and Sophia Chow, 6-0, to open the match.
The Toreros earned the win at No. 2 to knot the battle for the doubles point and leave it down to Court 1. The top Dons tandem of
Emily Maxfield and
Genevieve McCloskey took down Daniela Morales and Gemma Garcia, 6-4, to clinch the point and give USF the lead heading into singles play.
"We got a great start in doubles and it was great to see us put it together, especially when we struggled with that all season," noted USF head coach
Hilary Somers. "There was a slow start in singles and it got a little late to shift the momentum.
San Diego scored three unanswered to nab the lead before Borjeson recorded the 6-4, 7-5 win over Torres at No. 5 to pick up her second victory of the day and second-straight match with wins at both singles and doubles. The Dons challenged to gain points at No. 3 and
Margarita Treyes was leading her opponent on Court 6 when the match was halted, but by then the result was decided.
"I was hoping to push No. 3 singles to a third set, added Somers. "We needed just a few set points to take it to a third, but Emily couldn't pull it out. We are looking to rebound tomorrow for Senior Day and finish the conference round robin schedule strong."
The Dons close the regular season tomorrow against BYU at 11:30 a.m., as USF recognizes the squad's lone senior,
Genevieve McCloskey.
