CHEONAN, South Korea – Hunter Ashworth joined the New Zealand U20 National Team for the FIFA U20 World Cup, which got underway on Monday at the Cheonan Sports Complex in Cheonan, South Korea. Ashworth, who started the match at center back, helped the New Zealand squad come away with a 0-0 draw against Vietnam in their opening contest of pool play.
For Ashworth, this is his third stint with New Zealand and second World Cup appearance after playing in the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup in Santiago, Chile, where he appeared in three of New Zealand's four matches and scored his first international goal in a win over Paraguay.
Ashworth most recently helped New Zealand win the Oceania Football Confederation Championships this past summer in Port Vila, Vanuatu, starting all five contests and registering a goal against Vanuatu in the final.
The New Zealand squad moves on to meet Honduras in Group E play on Friday, before rounding out pool play with a Sunday fixture against France.
Ashworth redshirted this past season at USF and will enter the fall as redshirt sophomore. As a freshman in 2015, Ashworth started in 10 of his 13 appearances for the Dons.
