MTN | USF drops match against the Arizona Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Although the University of San Francisco men's tennis team was able to get a point off of the doubles round, it was outmatch 6-1 by the University of Arizona Wildcats on Friday, Jan. 26 at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.

"We got off to a great start in doubles," said head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "The improvement was huge in our doubles compared to our last match. Ryan [Marker] and Paul [Giraud] had a lot of poise closing our their clinching doubles match in a tiebreaker. In singles, we need to give credit to the Arizona team because they came out fired up and outworked us in every position. We look forward to getting another tough match tomorrow [against New Mexico State]."

The Wildcats were able to secure a match win to start the doubles by dominating Lucas Marinelle and Oliver Poysti, but Johan Joenhagen and Mert Zincirli came back for their team with a 6-3 victory. Giraud and Marker followed in suit with their won double win heading into the singles round.

USF struggled in the singles however, not putting up a single match win. Joenhagen dropped his match 6-0, 6-1 and Giraud followed with a 6-2, 6-2 loss as well. Marinelle, Zincirli and Marker put up solid fights in their single matches, but it wasn't enough for the Dons and the match concluded with their first loss of the season.

UP NEXT
The Dons will stay in Tucson, Ariz. and will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 27 when take on New Mexico State at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center. The Dons are now 1-1 going into their next contest against the Aggies. Saturday's matchup will be the start of the season for the Aggies, but it won't be the first time the two teams have met. USF is looking for a win against New Mexico State after it dropped its matchup against the Aggies in 2016 at the Mountain Pacific Invitational, 4-3.

"New Mexico State is a team where we need to jump on them early and build momentum," Almeida said. "I think we have the ability to do that against then. It's a team too that we are looking for a little bit of revenge. We've lost too close to them, 4-3 the last time we played them, so we really want to take that match and get some revenge."

The matchup is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
