SAN BRUNO — Senior middle blocker
Marjolijn Oskam and right side hitter
Emily Zinger both represented the San Francisco volleyball team Tuesday with Honorable Mention West Coast Conference All-Academic Team accolades, as announced by the conference office.
Â
Zinger carried a 3.70 cumulative Grade Point Average majoring in kinesiology during her second season with the Dons. She was an important player for the Dons both on offense and defense, ranking No. 2 on the team in kills with 232 and second in blocks with 82. She had double-digit kills in 10 matches and multiple blocks in 18. She logged a season-best 15 kills in back-to-back matches on Aug 25 and 31, and had a season-high eight blocks on two occasions, on Sept. 8 versus Southern Utah and in the season-finale versus Pacific.
Â
Oskam carried a 3.34 cumulative GPA while majoring in design during her final year at USF. She led the team with 93 total blocks and also put down 96 kills (1.13 per set). She had the second-best hitting percentage on the team (.228) for players with at least 1.00 kill per set, including a season-best .636 clip in the Dons' 3-0 sweep at Santa Clara on Nov. 16.
Â
"Mo was so impressive with her senior year in that she got better at the end of the year, and she had to deal with some injuries, but for her – setting an example, leaving a legacy for all these young players to follow; It was so impressive how she finished her career here," said San Francisco Head Coach
Frank Lavrisha.
Â
"They're so dedicated, especially Emily," he added. "The rate of improvement from last year to this year is kind of night and day. And taking care of all the school work on top of investing so much (on the court). Emily has really excelled in both her academics and improving herself as a player."
Â
Three student-athletes made their third consecutive appearance on the WCC All-Academic team: Saint Mary's Lindsey Calvin and Lindsey Knudsen and Portland's Lauren Naatz. 2018 WCC Player of the Year Roni Jones-Perry of BYU made her second consecutive appearance, as did teammate and 2018 WCC Defensive Player of the Year, Mary Lake. Loyola Marymount's Emma Johnson, Pepperdine's Frohling and Portland's Cali Thompson also appear on the list for the second time.
Â
This season, 23 nominated volleyball student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.50 or better while 11 recorded a mark of 3.75 or higher.
Â
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to her team.
