SAN FRANCISCO — Junior
Samantha Gong is selected first out of 10 golfers for the 2018-19 WCC Women's Golf All-West Coast Conference Preseason team while San Francisco was selected to finish third in preseason coaches' poll.
The San Francisco native was selected to the All-WCC team last season. Gong played in all 10 events and stroke an average of 75.1. She wrapped up the year tied for 11th at the WCC Championship and rose 10 spots on the leader board in the final day to finish with a 16-over 232 (82-76-74).
Over the weekend, San Francisco competed in its first tournament of the season, the Minnesota Invitational where Gong finished the tournament tied for 55th with a 12-over 228 (77-72-79). In day one of the Invitational, Gong opened the tournament with a 5-over on the front-9, which included a double bogie on the third hole. From there she played par glove for the remaining 27 holes and in the second round she was carded an even par 72. In day two, Gong ended her final round with birdies on 13 and 18, which she surrounded with five pars. Gong's nine birdies for the tournament was tied for ninth most.
The Dons were picked third in the WCC's Preseason Coaches' Poll with eight first place votes. BYU was selected as favorites to win the 2018-19 WCC Women's Golf Championship, totaling 16 (4) points and right behind the Cougars is Pepperdine with 13 (1) votes.
