Dons Dominate Day One At Battle In The Bay

SAN FRANCISCO — The 10th annual Battle In The Bay Classic Tournament got off to a dominant start as the San Francisco Dons made its presence felt on Friday at the California Tennis Club. 

In the women's doubles, the Dons duo Rita Colyer and Shanna Dos Santos defeated Sacramento State's Jenna Dorian and Maria Gonzalez, 8-6. The Dons pair Colyer and Santos will play a mixed team of the University of Pacific's Anneroos Nederstigit and USC's Danielle Willson in the semifinal round at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday September, 22. 

Emily Maxfield, Hanna Borjeson, Mya Bui and Rita Colyer dominated in singles taking down their opponents and moving on to the quarterfinal rounds. Maxfield defeated Fresno State's Alessia Dario in straight sets, 6-3; 6-0. Borjeson took on three tough sets against Santa Clara's Elvena Gevargiz beating her 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-3. Bui faced Jenna Dorian from Sacramento State University and escaped with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory. Maxfield, Borjeson and Colyer will compete against USC opponents as Maxfield will face Constance Branstine, Borjeson will take on Ana Neffa and Colyer will compete with Danielle Willson. Bui will battle against Fresno State's Jennifer Timotin as all three Dons will play their singles at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. 

San Francisco continued its success not just from the women's performance but also from the men's side. Romeo Midtgaard Jivraj took down No. 1 Wake Forest's Alan Gadjiev in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6) in the first round of singles, but fell in 32s to California's Bjorn Hoffmann, 6-3; 6-4. Paul Giraud defeated Texas Tech's Tommy Mylnikov 4-6. 6-4, 1-0 (7) then later fell in 32s to Mantas Bugiliskis from Fresno State, 7-5, 6-0.

In consultation draw, Nitzan Ricklis will play UC Santa Barbara's Tanner Smith on Saturday at 1 p.m, Phuc Huynh will face the winner of the University of Michigan Andrew Fenty and Stanford's Axel Geller in 16s round at 2 p.m.
