SAN FRANCISCO – Tremendous guard play and stellar defensive effort in crucial situations was the difference as the University of San Francisco men's basketball team outlasted the visiting Yale Bulldogs in overtime, winning 84-79 on Monday night. The Dons (3-0) had three players in double figures and were led by guards Jamaree Bouyea and Khalil Shabazz who both recorded double-doubles on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• With 3.2 seconds left in regulation, Yale's (2-1) Matthue Cotton hit a corner three in front of the Bulldogs bench to tie the game at 72-72. It was three of Cotton's 16 points, he was one of four Bulldogs in double figures.
• In overtime, the Dons defense was stifling – USF held the Bulldogs to seven points in the extra period, which included a 2-for-8 shooting performance and a 1-for-5 stretch from beyond the arc. The Dons countered by hitting 3-of-7 from the field and more importantly went 5-for-5 from the free throw line to ice the game.
• The back and forth contest featured 15 lead changes and seven ties, but USF appeared to be headed to a big win. With 7:20 in the first, the Dons had their largest lead of the night going up 16 thanks to a layup in the paint by Bouyea, two of his team-high 21 points.
• The Dons went into the half leading 35-29, Yale closed out the half on a 13-6 run that cut the deficit to six. Out of the break, the Bulldogs maintained their momentum going on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 39 with 15:56 to play.
•With 15:41 on the clock Cotton hit a three from the wing to give Yale a three point lead, their largest since they led by five early in the contest. From there the two sides traded buckets until the Dons eventually took a five point lead with 2:28 to play on a contested layup in the paint by Shabazz.
• The Dons bench, led by Shabazz's 17 points was the difference down the stretch. USF got 32 points from their reserves, including a season-high nine points from Remu Raitanen. Yale was led by Paul Atkinson's game-high 22 points, joining him in double figures was Cotton, Jordan Brunner 12 points and Erin Monroe with 10.
