MBB | Dons Outlast Aggies at Free Throw Line

SAN FRANCISCO - With only four ties and one lead change, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team battled it out against a gritty UC Davis team, winning 93-84 at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center Saturday afternoon.
 
The Dons (10-3) had four players finish in double figures and was led by Jamaree Bouyea's team-high 19 points.  Josh Kunen finished with a career-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.  Charles Minlend and Jimbo Lull both added 16.
 
The Dons outshot the Aggies (5-9) 62.1 percent to 55.2 percent in the second half, helping USF score a season-high 60 points after the intermission. UC Davis had four players finish in double figures and was led by Joe Mooney's game-high 22 points.  UC Davis finished the night 22-for-24 from the free throw line, but the Dons were 16-for-17 over the final five minutes from the charity stripe. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UC Davis was first on the board with a layup from Ezra Manjon. The Aggies opened up the game on a 15-6 run and led by as much as 11 with 7:49 to play in the first half.
  • Charles Minlend brought it back for the Dons, tying up the score 24-24 in the first half with a dunk. The Dons closed out the opening half on a 20-4 run thanks to the inside play of Jimbo Lull who finished with 12 of his 16 at the half.
  • Trevante Anderson gave USF a 14-point lead with a three — USF's largest lead of the game — but UC Davis closed the gap and were only trailing by three with nine minutes left in the game.
  • Free throws ended up being a huge factor down the stretch.  Minlend finished the night 7-for-10 from the charity stripe, Kunen was 8-for-8. 
  • With less than five minutes to play a pair of free throws by the Aggies' Joe Mooney made it 69-65, from there free throws helped the Dons hang on for the win and eclipse the 80-point mark for the eighth time this season.  USF was 16-for-17 from the line over the final four and a half minutes helping push their lead to as much a 10 with less than a minute remaining.
 
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • The Dons finished the game with four players in double figures, led by Jamaree Bouyea with 19 points. Lull and Minlend also had notable numbers, posting 16 points of their own.
  • Kunen was on his way to a double-double as he recorded 16 points and seven rebounds. He also had five assists during the game.
  • Dons posted 24 assists, 33 rebounds and scored 22 points off of turnovers with 12 second-chance points on the day. The Dons were 13-for-33 in field goals in the first half, but upped their game in the second half, bring their field goal stats to 18-for-29. USF also had a better three-point percentage in the second half, shooting 42.9 percent from deep.
  • Fun numbers for the Dons: they had 19 fastbreak points, were 12-for-17 in layups and 4-for-5 in dunks.
