SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco women's tennis team fought in a long-hard battle on Sunday afternoon, but fell in a heartbreaker in a singles point to Fresno State, 4-3 at the Olympic Club.
"Fresno State is a good opponent and we started off poorly in the doubles point. We were happy with the response our team came with in the singles and came within 4 points of winning the dual match," said assistant coach
Sean Dizon. "It came down to Sophomore
Alexa Meyer who battled, but came up short losing 7-5 in the third set to lose the dual."
In singles, is where the battle of San Francisco and Fresno State took a rise.
Mya Bui gave the Dons its first victory after winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 on court one.
Emily Maxfield continued to give the Dons a lift after taking down Bulldogs' Deniza Marcinkevica, 6-1, 6-2 on court two. Fresno State not only tallied its first win in singles, but tied the match after defeating
Shanna Dos Santos, 6-0, 6-1 on court six.
Bulldogs' Georgia Lawson ran away with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over
Margarita Treyes to lead Fresno State 3-2. But,
Hanna Borjeson continued to make it interesting and knotted the match up once again, 3-3 with a dominating, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win. It came down to the wire between
Alexa Meyer and Bulldogs' A.C. Hummel and with the decision on the final set, Hummel clinched the win over the Dons, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.
