SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco's women's tennis team fell to Long Beach State, 5-2, when the Beach pulled away with four key singles wins to secure their victory on Friday afternoon at the Olympic Club.
Long Beach State (5-0) took advantage of both competitions, when they started out the match with a 1-0 lead in doubles performance.
The Beach continued to push their lead in singles competition when Lalita Devarakonda led with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over
Shanna Dos Santos at #6. Then it was Natalia Munoz who gave the Beachs' a 3-0 lead after a 6-2, 6-0 win over
Margarita Treyes.
However, junior
Emily Maxfield executed the Dons first victory of the match when she took down Emma Bardet in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. Maxfield is dominating in the No. 2 spot for the Dons, with an undefeated 8-0 singles record.
Moments later, it was Dominique Meyer who clinched the match for Long Beach at #5 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over
Rita Colyer.
San Francisco (5-4) ended the last match on a positive note, when
Hanna Borjeson earned a solid 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Zara Lennon.
"We competed well today and again gave ourselves opportunities, but did not seize them when we needed to. Today was another good match for our team to learn from and next time we are going to be ready and covert on the opportunities," said assistant coach
Sean Dizon. "We have more room to continue to improve as a team. We will be in these situations again as the season continues, but we have come a long ways as a team. We know we can even take it to another level."
The Dons will host Louisiana Lafayette on March 2. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
