SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Freshman
Rita Colyer clinched the match for the University of San Francisco's women's tennis team, 4-3 in a West Coast Conference battle against Pacific on Monday morning at the Bay Club SF Tennis Center.
San Francisco (8-6, 1-1 WCC) got off to a strong start after sealing the doubles point at the No. 2 and 3 spots. It was the No. 2 pairing of
Rita Colyer and
Hanna Borjeson who earned a 6-2 victory over Anneroos Nederstigt and Maya Lopez. Although the Dons fell at No. 3, the duo
Mya Bui and
Emily Maxfield bounced back with a dominating 6-4 win at No. 1.
The Dons came out ambitious for the remaining of the match.
Mya Bui got the Dons off to a winning start at No. 1 over Nederstigt 6-1, 6-2. The Tigers (4-7, 1-1 WCC) began trailing the Dons, 2-1, when Dohee Lee defeated
Emily Maxfield in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 3
Hanna Borjeson recorded her fourth singles win of the season over Jacquie Tan, 7-5, 7-6. Moments later, Pacific responded with two key victories at No. 4 and 6 to tie the match 3-3.
Colyer then pulled away and clinched the match with a straight-set win over Maya Lopez, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 5.
"Today was another battle in the West Coast Conference against Pacific. Today we were one match better as it could have went either way. The stars aligned for our Freshman
Rita Colyer as today was her birthday and her first ever dual match win in college and also against a WCC opponent," said assistant coach
Sean Dizon. "Our team has grown through our experiences and today it paid off as we look to keep the momentum going later in the week."
