SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The University of San Francsico's men's tennis team fell in a heartbreaker to Portland, 4-2 in a West Coast Conference battle on Saturday afternoon at the California Tennis Club.
The Dons are now 3-11 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Portland secured the doubles point at the No. 1 and 2 positions.
Ryan Marker and
Phuc Huynh at No. 2 battled as a duo and fell in a tiebreaker, 7-6 that gave the Pilots a 1-0 lead early in the match.
In singles,
Paul Giraud at No. 2 and
Oz Daniel at No. 5 collected dominating straight set wins, 6-2, 6-3 to lead the Dons 2-1. At No. 3 Portlands' Tom Hann defeated
Nitzan Ricklis, 6-4, 6-2. Moments later, the Pilots took a 3-2 lead at No. 4 after Eleftherios Neos defeated
Phuc Huynh in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6(4), 7-6(8). The match was then clinched in the No. 1 spot in the third set when
Ryan Marker was defeated by Sema Pankin, 7-6(5), 3-6, 3-4.
San Francisco will go on a three-game road trip starting next week. The Dons first stop is at the University of Utah on Thursday, April 4.
