SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Ryan Marker and
Nitzan Ricklis was honored Wednesday to the 2019 all-West Coast Conference teams. Senior Marker landed his first all-WCC Second Team Singles Team award, followed by Ricklis who sparked his freshman campaign earning Singles Honorable Mention.
Marker's all-WCC second team honor came after his strong performance against Pepperdine in his second to last home match of his collegiate career. Marker clinched a solid 4-3 victory over the Waves to hand the Dons their first win of the season, followed by his final dual match when he led 7-6, 3-2 before the match went unfinished against Loyola Marymount. Marker closed out the season going 5-7 and 3-2 in conference play at No. 1.
"I am so proud that Ryan was honored by the coaches of our conference. He played last year injured in every match and after a tough surgery he led the team this spring playing No. 1. Ryan has been one of our most consistent singles contributors every year in a top 3 position and has recorded wins over many of the top programs in the country. So happy he finished strong for his senior year," said head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida.
Ricklis performed exceptionally for the Dons from start to finish as he led the team with a 10-5 singles record and went 5-2 in the WCC. Ricklis saw key singles victories against Hawaii, Army, Fresno State, Gonzaga, and Pepperdine. Before the spring season, Ricklis was named Norcal Men's Open Play of the Year after showing tremendous amounts of confidence and success playing against high-leveled matches as a freshman.
"As a freshman Nitzan has earned his respect among the conference programs. I am very happy that coaches voted for him and his honorable mention is well deserved. Nitzan wants to improve and never wants to not play a match. His competitiveness is contagious and his work ethic pushes everyone around him to do better. We look forward to building this team's big freshman class with Nitzan," said
Pablo Pires de Almeida.
San Francisco concluded the season with an overall 4-15 record and stood ninth in conference play with its 1-8 record.
