Track and Field

TRK | Klein, Henderson Advance at NCAA West Prelim

DAY ONE RESULTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Four of five qualified Dons competed Thursday on the first day of the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary meet at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium, with two – Sadi Henderson and Dana Klein – advancing to compete for another day and a chance at qualifying for the NCAA National Championship meet.

Klein was one of 24 qualifiers to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals in the women's 1,500 meters. She ran the sixth-fastest time of the day, running 4 minutes, 17.17 seconds, and finishing fifth in her heat to grab an automatic qualifying spot. Klein's heat (No. 2) was the fastest heat of the day, with five of the six fastest times all coming from that section. Her impressive performance put her ahead of five fellow West Coast Conference runners, including four from BYU, and 13 Pac-12 runners from Stanford, California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, USC and Arizona State.

Klein will compete at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1,500 quarterfinals, with an opportunity to advance to the NCAA National Championship semifinals and finals in Austin, Texas, on June 5-8. The top 12 finishers in the event will advance to next month's competition.

Henderson advanced to Friday's quarterfinals in the women's 800. She finished fourth in her heat, just outside of an automatic qualifying spot, but her time of 2:07.66 was one of the six "next fastest times" outside of the automatic qualifiers, moving her on to Friday. She finished 18th overall in the field.

Henderson will compete at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the 800 quarterfinals, with the top 12 finishers advancing to the NCAA National Championship semifinals and finals next month. She will need to finish among the top-three in her heat, or have one of the next three fastest times outside of the automatic qualifiers in order to clinch a spot in Austin, Texas.

Two USF men also competed on Thursday. Jack Rowe competed in the 10,000 meters semifinals – a direct qualification to the national championship for the top-12 finishers, finishing 18th overall. He ran 29:22.21, less than 20 seconds away from a qualifying spot. All 12 advancing runners ran in a pack, finishing within less than four seconds of each other. Hugh Nicklason finished 43rd overall in the 1,500 with a time of 3:51.79 in a very competitive field that saw all 24 advancing runners break the 3:50 mark, and 17 of them run 3:45 or better.
